Wolterton Hall is included in the Tatler Travel Guide 2021: ‘The 101 best places to stay in the world’.

If the Walpoles were once one of the most powerful families in England, their legacy endures in two of the four powerhouses of Norfolk: Houghton and Wolterton. The latter stands more impressive than ever, a majestic testament to the family’s 18th-century ambition, thanks to visionary design duo Peter Sheppard and Keith Day, who bought the Palladian pile in 2016.

Each item, whether sourced from Venice, auction houses or the Walpoles themselves, tells a story: be it the golden corona in the East Wing tower room rumoured to have recently been in the possession of Lady Annabel Goldsmith, or the set of 17th-century Antwerp tapestries given to Horatio Walpole by Cardinal de Fleury, Louis XV’s foreign minister.

Out in the grounds, yet more transformations are underway as the piggeries become artists’ studios, the old gardeners’ cottages guest rooms, and the coach house and stables a doubtless magnificent spa and restaurant.
