Country Life - Old houses, new spaces

When Peter Sheppard and Keith Day embarked on the restoration of Wolterton Hall four years ago, the Grade I listed Palladian house in Norfolk that was built for Horatio Walpole, it was important that the new kitchen had minimal impact on the fabric of the building. With two windows overlooking the lake and park and a door leading to the library, which is now used for everyday dining, the space previously known as the Eating Room lent itself perfectly to a new life as the main kitchen of the house.

The plumbing and electrics are mostly accommodated in the basement and lighting is fitted into extractor fans to illuminate the two kitchen islands with their stainless-steel work surfaces. One of the islands incorporates hobs; the other has a charcoal and teppanyaki grill. To minimise disturbance to the structure of the building, none of the joinery is fitted and could comfortably be removed in a day to return the room to its original appearance. Together with all the architectural detail, the 18th-century marble fireplace has also been retained and is flanked by a pair of Art Deco armchairs.
